The City of Windhoek has acknowledged growing frustration among motorists over potholes across various suburbs and townships, attributing the situation largely to persistent rainy weather. According to the municipality, sustained rainfall during and immediately after the rainy season makes permanent pothole repairs technically unfeasible, as repair materials cannot properly bind to wet road surfaces. City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye said in some areas, interim safety measures were applied, while other repairs had to be deferred until weather conditions improve. "On the aspect of previously repaired portholes that have reopened since the rain began. In many cases, these repairs were temporary and emergency interventions implemented to reduce immediate, or should I say immediate, damages to road users. Heavy rainfall, water infiltration beneath the road structure and continuous traffic can weaken these temporary repairs, which causes or results in the resurfacing of the potholes." He added that this does not necessarily indicate poor workmanship but rather the limitations of road maintenance during prolonged wet conditions. Akwenye noted that the city is addressing potholes across Windhoek, with priority given to routes with heavy traffic. "Prioritisation is guided by the following aspects: traffic volume and public transport routes, safety risks to motorists and pedestrians, main arterial routes, and access to essential services, as well as severity and extent of road damage. Residential streets are also addressed, but major routes are prioritised to maintain citywide mobility and safety. So where there's a lot of traffic around Windhoek, and there are potholes, that's where we focus first to make sure and to ensure the safety of our motorists." Residents are encouraged to report potholes through the City of Windhoek customer care centre, the official city social media platforms, and the city's website. The City of Windhoek has appealed for patience, assuring residents that maintenance teams are actively attending to potholes that pose immediate danger while longer-term repairs are scheduled once weather conditions allow. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
