The mill's vertical head has a couple of small, but annoying, oil leaks. Having not been able to find a handbook it was necessary to tackle the disassembly without being sure how it would work out. Instead of the expected rotating oil seal it turned out that the design obviated the need for one. Disassembly was not straightforward because one small component became dislodged. It was necessary to repair this item. I am making an accurate CAD layout drawing of the whole assembly to better understand how it was designed and to try to check that the bevel gears are meshing correctly. This drawing and the cure for the oil leak will be the subject of the video to follow. 00:00 Introduction - oil leaks 01:09 Starting disassembly 02:41 Removal of lower bearing retainer 04:45 Removing side cover 07:23 Bevel gears exposed 08:31 Oil level relative to parts 09:32 Removal of spindle 11:34 Two main castings separated on the bench 12:07 Two reasons why spindle removal was difficult 13:02 Repair of damaged oil spinner 16:14 Obtaining correct gear mesh - measuring parts to produce CAD drawing 19:38 Work planned for next video Links to parts 1 & 2 of this series: • Adcock & Shipley milling machine restorati... • Adcock & Shipley milling machine - part 2 ...
