One name that synonymously comes to mind when we talk about Kumarji is Vasantrao Achrekar ji, who accompanied him on the tabla. He was a long-time accompanist of Kumarji, accompanying him consistently all over the world, and India, for more than 2 decades. Vasantrao’s accompaniment of Kumarji is a beautiful topic to speak about. It is an example of beautiful synergy between two very thoughtful and creative artists. He was not only a valuable accompanist, but also a wonderful producer (in today’s context of the word) and organizer, who helped Kumarji reach deep into the interiors of Maharashtra, as well as large parts of the country. The composition I choose in that regards is a beautiful bandish in Raga Bihag that Kumarji composed in Vilambit Ektaal — “Ye Mora Man Haro Re”. In an article titled — “Ud Jayega Hans Akela”, Kumarji writes his memoirs of his time spent with Vasantrao along with a brief description of Vasantrao’s life story. He brings up a trip of the Kailash Temple at Ellora, that he went along with Vasantrao (who also organized it). He talked about being so mesmerized by the Kailash caves in the Ellora complex, that he lost himself in it’s beauty. This is a beautiful memory that Kumarji shared with Vasantrao, and I felt that this was an apt memory to share, as the project comes closer to fruition and we remember Vasantrao and his legacy. / ye-mora-man-a-tribute-to-beautiful-cave-pa...
