Apanteles is a genus of tiny parasitic wasps belonging to the family Braconidae and is widely recognized as a beneficial biological control agent in agriculture. These wasps are natural enemies of several lepidopteran caterpillar pests such as Helicoverpa armigera, Spodoptera litura, and Plutella xylostella. The female Apanteles locates the host caterpillar and injects its eggs inside the host body. After hatching, the parasitoid larvae feed internally on the host tissues without immediately killing it, allowing the caterpillar to continue feeding for some time. Once development is complete, the larvae emerge from the host and spin characteristic white silken cocoons either on or near the dead or weakened caterpillar. This parasitic action effectively suppresses pest populations in the field and makes Apanteles an important component in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Being host-specific and environmentally safe, it helps reduce the dependence on chemical pesticides and contributes to sustainable crop protection strategies.
