Ichneumonidae is a large family of parasitic wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera. Members of this family are commonly known as ichneumon wasps, and they play a significant role in biological control of agricultural and forest pests. They are endoparasitoids or ectoparasitoids of larvae and pupae of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera. Female wasps lay eggs on or inside the host insect, and the developing larvae consume the host, ultimately killing it. Many species are host-specific, making them valuable in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). They are non-stinging to humans and considered completely safe for field release. Ichneumonid wasps are characterized by a slender body, long ovipositor (in females), and clear wings with distinctive venation. 👉 Ecological Role: They help naturally suppress pests like caterpillars, borers, leaf miners, and sawflies, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.
