Three-minute overview of how we made a home library with a domed ceiling, 170m (185 yards) of shelves, a secret door, and a rolling ladder for about 7,000 books. The space was formerly a milk bar/corner store. Making this home library was a Covid project in Melbourne, Australia, which, I'm told, had the world's longest lockdown (262 days) - an opportunity. Unfortunately, the video doesn't capture the wonderful ambience of the room or how it has become central to our lives. The shelf and dome lighting uses warm LED strips on dimmers. The northern, former shop window looks out beneath a wide veranda onto a quiet street through a grape vine, which gives a seasonal dimension. My wife and I now begin and end the day in our library, and it has become an intimate venue for book clubs and occasional salons. We found a lovely art-deco feather couch on which I am sitting now. Unexpectedly, the books talk among themselves and decide what we will read next. The next book to be read often jumps out (metaphorically), demanding attention. Slowly, the books are finding their places. Some are arranged alphabetically, others by subject, others like to move around. The secret door is hardly a secret but it provides access to a toilet/bathroom through a wall of Penguin Classics, because books can be heavy and they are relatively light. This video was made for a Salon (in the library) on the subject of 'making' in order to illustrate the process of realising an idea. If nothing else, it should show that making your own library is not hard, but it does require some thought as to shelf spacings and layout. If you are in Melbourne, Australia, I'm happy to invite you in (just message me) and always happy to answer any questions?
