Operating since 1931, the Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant, the largest in New Jersey American Water’s system, is located at the confluence of the Raritan and Millstone Rivers. It provides water to more than 1 million people in seven counties in central New Jersey. The completion of this $37 million project protects the water treatment plant against significant weather events and keeps the facility in central New Jersey fully operational. Enhancements to the plant include the raising of the current flood wall and berms to provide flood protection from storm events up to 500-year recurring frequency. This project is part of a greater $65 million investment to help ensure protection from the increased risk of flooding during extreme weather events, and maintain a sustainable water supply for more than 1 million people in central New Jersey. The plant was tested three times in recent years where peak flood water levels were recorded within inches from the top of the berm/wall. Previous plant flood protection held firm against Hurricane Irene in 2011, but highlighted that moving forward protection against storm events up to 500 year level was needed.
