Hiking to the Highest Point in New Mexico w/ Snow! | Wheeler Peak - Views, Marmots, & Glissading!

Wheeler Peak was supposed to be the first day of my 2 week road trip in May/June 2023, but due to some poor planning and iffy weather forecasts, it ended up being day 3… Regardless, this hike was so epic and I’m not at all disappointed with the outcome! Wheeler Peak is the New Mexico high point, rising up 13,161’ above sea level. There are multiple trails to the summit, but I summited via Williams Lake on a mostly snow covered trail. It is hard to put into words how much I loved this hike… Not only was it my first time glissading (sliding down the mountain on your butt), which made me feel like a kid again, but I got to hang with some adorable marmots and just like with many of these high mountain peaks, the views were just completely breathtaking! Normally a hike with this kind of milage/elevation gain (8.7mi / 2,972’) isn’t a big deal to me, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t dead tired by the end of this one after having to double back many times, hiking up and down quite steep slopes to retrieve my camera. Lol A lot of the trail was covered in snow and for much of it, I was just going straight up, instead of what normally would have been more gradual switchbacks, so that definitely made it feel more tough and the key was to take slower steps… but I’m impatient. Lol I really wanted to capture how steep some of the slopes were and I personally think those shots come out great, so it is all worth it in the end! Thankfully, glissading made getting down a good chunk of the mountain very quick and easy, but I had been loving it so much on the mountain that I didn’t want to leave and I ran out of water. I was going to stop at Williams Lake anyway, so I used that opportunity to use my emergency life straw that I carry with me in my daypack to filter some water from the lake. Overall, I don’t think you can go wrong climbing any of the 13ers or 14ers in the west and this one was no exception. The only thing I hated about this hike is having to leave.
