Super Mario Sunshine, Part 9: Victory!

Originally streamed Mar 21, 2023. After having played a lot of Retro stuff, I decide to spent a month just focusing on modern games, specifically Switch games for this "Switching It Up" special. In later years I would tend to call this "Modern March." This was my first time playing Mario Sunshine, and I'm glad I did. It's extremely good, probably the 2nd best 3D Mario next to Mario 64! The controls feel just as good as Mario 64, but the new moves are quite nice, especially the ability to spray water and then jump and slide into it as a new advanced movement tech. I think the level design really really shines in this game, it uses a lot of verticality and there are many moments of high intensity platforming and are extremely exciting and fun. I would say there are some drawbacks with this game. First, the soundtrack just isn't nearly as good as Mario 64. A lot of the tracks are pretty forgettable, although I love the classic Delfino Plaza theme and the bonus area music. (The various bonus areas are really fun platforming challenges, I quite like the addition of those!) The collectibles get a little out of control, specifically with the blue coins. There is a bit too many of them; this is a problem later 3D Marios have as well, particularly Odyssey's silly amount of moons. Mario 64's restraint in littering the stages with collectables turns out to be the perfect amount, another reason why that game is still the best. Finally, this game feels more restrictive than Mario 64 in how going after each shine traps you in an instance meant for that shine, and even the amount of coins is adjusted depending on which you go for. This becomes very annoying when you're trying to figure out which stage instance to use for the 100 coin shine. Despite all of those little nuisances, this game is overall extremely well designed, and easily still one of the best 3D platformers. It managed to have a feeling of excitement to it's platforming that Galaxy, Odyssey, or any later 3D platformer just can't match. Extremely good game!
