In this video, Dr. Vivek Sukumar (Surgical Oncologist, SSO Hospitals, Mumbai) will give us information on a carcinoembryonic antigen test (CEA Test) A carcinoembryonic antigen test is used to check how well treatment is working in certain types of cancer, particularly bowel cancer. CEA Test is a tumor marker. When the level of CEA is more it increases the risk of tumors & also your risk of developing cancer. In this video on Specialty Surgical Oncology, Dr Vivek Sukumar ( Consultant Surgical Oncologist) is going to talk about the CEA Test.The blood test for CEA is just like any other blood test, the report of this test can be obtained within 12-14 hrs. When the level is below 3 nanograms ml it is said to be normal. Whereas, in smokers, this level is found to be up to 5 nanograms ml. When the CEA test comes out to be positive, you may need to have a chest CT scan, abdominal CT scan, or a PET Scan. The level of CEA is generally high in rectum cancer, large intestine cancer, etc. Other cancers with high levels of CEA – -Medullary cancer of the thyroid -Small intestine cancer -Pancreas cancer -Ovary cancer -Prostate cancer There also are some conditions that may lead to high CEA levels – Smoking, Infection, Liver failure, Liver cirrhosis, or Inflammatory bowel disease.
