The trigger of the planet's most recent ice age was a massive impact event. Approximately 2.5 million years ago, a massive asteroid slammed into the ocean off the western coastline of Chile, forming a 35 kilometer or 22 mile wide crater. Its formation generated towering megatsunamis several hundred meters tall which would go on to effect areas ranging from Mexico to Australia. If not for this ancient event, the ice age may have never happened. This video will discuss this massive impact crater and how it formed.
