In the headlines, the big story is this supposed upcoming meeting in Istanbul between the U.S. and Iran with a number of other countries also involved. Everything is seemingly “on hold” until this meeting takes place. Whether anything will come out of it is anyone’s guess. Istanbul meetings this week focus on avoiding Iran-US conflict, official says (Jerusalem Post) Iran accused of forcibly injecting detainees as deaths in custody rise (i24news) Russia launches largest missile and drone strike of year on Ukraine (i24news) Headline 1 Istanbul meetings this week focus on avoiding Iran-US conflict, official says (Jerusalem Post) The official said some of the countries invited to the talks at the foreign ministers' level included Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The priority of talks between Iran and the United States this week in Istanbul is to avoid any conflict and de-escalate tensions between the two sides, a regional official told Reuters on Tuesday, adding a group of regional powers were also invited. The person said the format of the meetings remained unclear, but that the "main meeting" would be on Friday and that it was important to start dialog between the parties to avoid further escalation. According to media reports on Monday, Top US and Iranian officials are due to meet to hold talks on a possible nuclear deal, while Iran's military chief threatened that "no American would be safe" if the US conducted strikes on Iran. Accordingly, there will be no attack by the United States against Iran until this meeting takes place. What this story is communicating is that there is a last-minute attempt to avoid any military conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Again, the U.S. has been demanding three things from Iran, stop enriching uranium and transfer your stockpiles to some neutral site. Stop your long-range ballistic missile program and finally dissolve the terrorist network you have created with Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis etc. Will Iran agree to any of this? The Supreme Leader yesterday said “No” to removing the stockpile. Therefore, as it now stands, a solution does not look good.
