Nirvāṇa Ṣaṭkam | Mantra-inspired Author: Adi Shankaracharya 📜Historical and Philosophical Context: Adi Shankaracharya (788-820 CE) was a great philosopher and theologian of Hinduism, known primarily for developing and spreading the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. This philosophy asserts that the ultimate reality (Brahman) is one indivisible consciousness, and individual selves (Atman) are essentially identical to Brahman. At the age of eight, Shankara met his guru, Govinda Bhagavatpada, who tasked him with propagating the teachings of Advaita. One of the key texts attributed to Shankara is the "Nirvana Shatakam." The Text of the Mantra: 🌍 IAST (with Capitalized Words) Mano-Buddhy-Ahaṅkāra-Cittāni Nāham Na Ca Śrotra-Jihve Na Ca Ghrāṇa-Netre Na Ca Vyoma-Bhūmir Na Tejo Na Vāyuḥ Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham Na Ca Prāṇa-Saṁjño Na Vai Pañca-Vāyuḥ Na Vā Sapta-Dhātur Na Vā Pañca-Kośaḥ Na Vāk-Pāṇi-Pādaṁ Na Copastha-Pāyū Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham Na Me Dveṣa-Rāgau Na Me Lobha-Mohau Mado Naiva Me Naiva Mātsarya-Bhāvaḥ Na Dharmo Na Cārtho Na Kāmo Na Mokṣaḥ Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham Na Puṇyaṁ Na Pāpaṁ Na Saukhyaṁ Na Duḥkhaṁ Na Mantro Na Tīrthaṁ Na Vedā Na Yajñāḥ Ahaṁ Bhojanaṁ Naiva Bhojyaṁ Na Bhoktā Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham Na Me Mṛtyu-Śaṅkā Na Me Jāti-Bhedaḥ Pitā Naiva Me Naiva Mātā Na Janma Na Bandhur Na Mitraṁ Gurur Naiva Śiṣyaḥ Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham Ahaṁ Nirvikalpo Nirākāra-Rūpo Vibhutvāc Ca Sarvatra Sarvendriyāṇām Na Cāsaṅgataṁ Naiva Muktir Na Meyaḥ Cid-Ānanda-Rūpaḥ Śivo'ham Śivo'ham 🌿Meaning of the Mantra: The "Nirvana Shatakam" mantra is a profound expression of Advaita Vedanta philosophy, which asserts that the true nature of the self (Atman) is inseparable from the all-pervading consciousness (Brahman). Through a series of negations, Shankara dismisses everything that is transient and changing to ultimately reveal the unchanging, eternal nature of the self as pure consciousness and bliss, identified with Shiva. This mantra is used for meditation and contemplation on the true nature of the self, leading the practitioner to experience oneness with the divine. Tags: #mantra #nirvanashatakam #lordshiva
