(14 Feb 2000) English/Nat Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta has praised Indonesia's president for suspending General Wiranto. The powerful security chief has been implicated in the violence that devastated East Timor following its independence vote in August. Jose Ramos-Horta is in Bangkok for the U-N Trade and Development Conference. He has been travelling around Asia trying to raise East Timor's profile with leaders and potential investors. He was told about President Abdurrahman Wahid's decision to suspend Security Minister General Wiranto on Monday morning. He welcomed the move by Wahid - popularly known as Gusdur - saying it would help show the international community that Jakarta was serious about issue of war crimes . SOUNDBITE: (English) \"I would applaud such a decision by President Gusdur. It will only strengthen, enhance the credibility of Indonesia, of the Indonesian president. Because Indonesia must be seen by the rest of the world to be serious and firm in handling the issue of war crimes and crimes against humanity in East Timor, perpetrated by senior Indonesian army officers, including General Wiranto.\" SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timor Leader He added that Wahid had shown admirable courage in the face of tyranny and militarism.
