3 Months Later: Beginner Hydroponic Herb Garden Update (ft. Monster Cilantro)

In this episode I will give a three-month update on the beginner DIY hydroponic system I built during my Hydroponics 101 series. What started as a simple deep water culture container growing parsley, cilantro, and basil turned into a surprising lesson in how plants behave in hydroponics. Two cilantro plants were grown in the exact same system... but one of them grew into an absolute giant. That single plant became so large that it began draining the reservoir at an unexpected rate, forcing me to rethink how small hydroponic systems handle fast-growing herbs. In this update we look at: The current state of the DIY hydroponic herb system Differences in growth between identical plants Root competition between parsley plants Why one cilantro plant exploded in size How plant size affects water consumption in small reservoirs Maintenance challenges in beginner hydroponic systems The warm airflow from a nearby HVAC vent raised the nutrient solution temperature to around 71°F, which is actually near the optimal range for many hydroponic herbs. Combined with the massive leaf canopy of the larger cilantro plant, this likely increased transpiration and led to the rapid water usage seen in the system. Sometimes the most valuable lessons in gardening come from simply watching plants grow and learning from what happens.
