Brother Malcolm explains the importance of divide and conquer. Steve Biko once said "We are oppressed not as individuals, not as Zulus, Xhosas, Vendas or Indians. We are oppressed because we are black. We must use that very concept to unite ourselves and to respond as a cohesive group. We must cling to each other with a tenacity that will shock the perpetrators of evil." For a people to be unified in the true sense, they must have a common ideology (body of ideas) reflecting a common outlook, which provides a common direction and objective. That ideology to properly serve the people must come from that people's culture and own historical experiences. Same people: The common identity of African people cannot be denied. This identity is reflected in various ways, from our physical features to our common history and culture. It is from our culture that we must formulate the principles, methods, and objectives that should guide our struggle. Our traditional culture is one that stresses the collective good over the individual. This collective nature must not only define our people as our priority, but also be a reflection of how we organize our collective struggle for freedom. Same Problems: Our common identity is reflected in us having the same problems regardless of where we live in this world. In Africa we do not control the means of producing the necessities of life and development. Throughout the world we do not control our labor power or the political institutions which govern our lives. It is this reality which places our youth to be used as child soldiers in the drug and mineral trades in Africa and the Diaspora. Therefore for us to rise in Zimbabwe, Kingston, Harlem or Watts, Africa and her people must rise as a whole. Same Solutions: Some may ask the question, "what is relevance of seeing myself as African as opposed to Ghanaian, Haitian or African-American, etc?" A people with a common identity and a common destiny, especially a people suffering from exploitation, MUST have a common objective. As Malcolm X taught us, all revolutionary struggles for freedom are based on land. The land of Africa must be the focal point of our struggle for social, political and economic development. Pan-Africanism must be our objective for Africans at home and abroad! No infringement of copyright is intended in any way under DMCA, under the terms of fair use for education.
