In this recorded lecture, Sanchita Balachandran — art conservator and Director of the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute — explored the celebrated ceramic traditions of ancient Athens. Back in 1965, Joseph Veach Noble’s book The Techniques of Painted Attic Pottery reshaped our understanding of Athenian ceramics. More than 60 years later, this talk revisited Noble’s work and expanded it with insights from experimental archaeology, materials science, and conservation. The result is a deeper, more human look at how these ancient makers created their iconic vessels.
