This is an 11½ -mile out-and-back route to Mount Wrightson (O'odham: Ce:wi Duag “choo duh awg”) via Gardner Canyon on the east side in the Santa Rita Mountains. There’s 3,600’ of elevation gain. / @flynnhikes Not many hikers head to the peak on this trail, mainly due to (1) the long dirt road that’s sometimes in not-so-great condition (it was fine in December 2024) and (2) the few people willing to drive to the east side of the Santa Ritas when Madera Canyon is much closer for folks driving from Tucson. If you're looking for a low key route to the peak, this is the one. If you want a more popular and busier trail that’s closer to Tucson, drive to Madera Canyon and start on the Old Baldy Trail. The distances and elevation gain are about the same no matter which route you hike. DIRECTIONS to the trailhead: Turn west off of State Route 83 onto Gardner Canyon Road (which is also called FR 92). Drive almost 7 miles until you turn left onto FR 785. Then drive 5 miles to the parking area, passing through one cow gate along the way. Close the gate! FR 785 is graded less often than FR 92, and a vehicle with some extra clearance will help you get to the trailhead more easily.
