Sir John Whittingdale, MP for Maldon, pressed the Ministry of Justice on the growing problem of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs) — cases often used to silence journalists and critics. Sir John questioned whether the Solicitors Regulation Authority is fit for purpose after losing two tribunal cases in a single week, and asked if further legislation is needed to prevent lawyers from pursuing abusive claims. Responding, the Minister of State confirmed that the Government is monitoring the SLAPPs provisions in the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, and is actively considering extending the definition of SLAPPs beyond economic crime. She emphasised that while the SRA is independent, its guidance must be upheld robustly to protect democracy and free speech.
