In my patch last week I mentioned that a musical way to use non-quantized randomness is to direct it at other parameters than pitch. So, of course, here's a patch using non-quantized randomness and other non-quantized voltages to control… pitch. However, there are a couple of things here that I think are decent tips for non-quantized pitch sequences: For one, the non-quantized sequence sounds less random and off-key when it's repeating a short phrase. That makes it easier to predict the pattern even if it doesn't use a conventional scale. Also, try thinking of random/untuned/non-quantized sound sources as percussive rather than melodic elements. An interesting, but predictable rhythm makes it sound less chaotic and more musical, in my opinion. Patch notes: Wogglebug clocks a simple sequence, which is being played by Tides. I'm using the last two segments off Stages to produce a simple decay envelope for Tides Smoothness (lowpass filter), which also serves to silence it between notes like an LPG. Only one segment is actually required to make the envelope, but I'm using a "hold" segment (with zero hold time) in front of the decay segment in order to control the amplitude of the envelope. This also allows the amplitude to be modulated by Wogglebug's smooth random CV. This leaves only four segments to produce the sequence. To mix it up, I'm using Wogglebug's stepped random CV in place of every fourth step. I also have the trigger out from this step patched to modulate the master clock speed. Depending on how the modulation depth is set, it can effectively halve the duration of that fourth step which gives the sequence a 7/8 feel. Finally, I'm using one of Wogglebug's chaotic audio outputs to add some noisy FM for Tides, and the Woggle CV out to modulate its timbre via the Slope parameter. * * Thanks for watching! :) Feel free to request upcoming module combinations from my rack, and check out the #3modulechallenge for more 3 module patches! ➢ Series overview: https://goo.gl/TyP8jS ➢ Modulargrid: https://goo.gl/by1AUE ➢ ➢ Support the channel by buying some music via https://comparativeirrelevance.bandca... https://linktr.ee/comparativeirrelevance
