Rokuō-in is located in the Arashiyama area and can be reached from Kyoto Station in about forty minutes by train and on foot. This Rinzai Zen temple was founded in 1380 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, and was ranked fifth among the Ten Principal Zen Temples of Kyoto during the Muromachi period, reflecting its distinguished status. It is also renowned for its autumn foliage. In the fall, trees at the approach leading from the temple gate and the maple trees planted throughout the garden turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, creating a brilliant display across the grounds.
