Welcome to PCTB Insaf Academy and our lecture on Ionic Solids! In this lecture, we will discuss the properties, characteristics and classifications of ionic solids. We will also cover the structure of ionic solids and their crystal lattice. Ionic solids are composed of positively and negatively charged ions. The positively charged ions, called cations, are attracted to the negatively charged ions, called anions. This creates a strong electrostatic force which binds the ions together in a lattice. The lattice of an ionic solid can be either cubic or hexagonal. In addition, ionic solids tend to have higher melting and boiling points than other types of solids. Examples of ionic solids include table salt, sodium chloride, and iodine molecule. Molecular solids are composed of molecules, which are held together by strong covalent bonds. Molecular solids tend to have lower melting and boiling points than ionic solids. Examples of molecular solids include water, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. Metallic solids are composed of atoms that are held together by metallic bonding. Metallic solids are usually ductile and malleable and often have high melting points. Examples of metallic solids include gold, silver, and copper. Covalent solids are composed of atoms that are held together by covalent bonds. Covalent solids tend to have high melting and boiling points and are often brittle. Examples of covalent solids include diamond and graphite. At the end of this lecture, you will be able to answer MCQs related to Ionic Solids. So let's get started!
