(27 Oct 1998) Natural Sound A Czech military helicopter crashed into a hillside above a remote field in Bosnia on Monday, killing the three peacekeepers aboard. The Czech Mi-17 helicopter had disappeared late on Sunday while on a routine flight from Gornji Vakuf in northwestern Bosnia to the Croatian port of Split. British helicopters found the wreckage at Tomislavgrad, 105 kilometres (65 miles) southwest of Sarajevo. The wreckage was spotted by British helicopters on Monday on a hillside near Tomislavgrad. But when rescue teams finally reached the crash site, they found that all three crew members had perished. A British SFOR spokesman said the three victims had been based in the northwestern town of Velika Kladusa. They were part of the Czech Battalion which belongs to the 36-thousand-strong multi-national peacekeeping force. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) "The aircraft was a Czech Mi-17 helicopter with three crew members on board. It was en-route to Split at the time. It departed from Gornji Vakuf at 1725 PM. The military and the civilian operation is under way. The helicopter and the crew were based at Velika Kladusa as a part of a Czech S-FOR battalion supporting the Multinational division in the South West." SUPER CAPTION: Captain Peter Stephenson, British SFOR spokesman SFOR officials said it was still too early to say what caused the crash. Locals said a heavy rainstorm was raging in the area at the time of the crash. Since NATO deployed the peace force three years ago, 86 members have died while on duty in non-combat accidents - mostly traffic accidents or land-mine blasts.
