Wronged Sports: / @wrongedsports The Touchback: / @thetouchback What happened to a gimmick match that became a thing in 1994 and by 2003 it felt like it was a played out match cause it was done all of the time. Seriously there was a ladder match it seemed like every week in the early TNA days and WWE had them and always tried to one up it to the point where whenever a ladder match is scheduled, it's weird if it isn’t a multi person ladder match with tables, chairs, and other weapon groups . It is really not a match anymore but just a bunch of crazy spots most of the time, which is great, but the match has just become a hodgepodge of things. Before the Bret vs Shawn ladder match in 1994, the first one that anyone has a record of is one between Dan Kroffat vs Tor Kamata in Stampede in 1972, where the object was to get some money hanging from the ceiling. This would continue in AWA and in some other promotions but things were relatively quiet until WWE began doing ladder matches in the mid-90s. Then ECW put their own spin on the match making it worse. By 2000, ladder match fever had hit professional wrestling with WCW and just about every independent promotion doing these. TNA took things to a whole other level, throwing Dusty Rhodes in a ladder match. The future of the ladder match can only go 3 ways: the match goes away, or it somehow gets crazier, or it reinvents itself again somehow. We can take guesses or just end the video with asking what more can be done to the match that hasn’t been done or at least tried. But before we answer that question, it is important to understand what happened to the ladder match. Don't forget to subscribe to Special Guest Referee for more wrestling content.
