Going it Alone The theme of today was learning to face the world alone. Val, Janet and Nancy were otherwise occupied so I did my morning walk with just Mystic for company. Alone, he was a different horse. All the way down Main Street, he would pause every 60 feet or so, examine the terrain carefully, then go forward again, but trailing behind me, not syncing with me or leading me. That changed when we hit the mid point of the walk when he decided the fastest way home was forward and he took the lead! He never pulls on the line, but he glanced back a few times to tell me I was pathetically slow! Next up, I took Amadeo for his walk down Main Street. He was much braver than Mystic walking without his senior equine companions. Since I had dropped a couple of treats every 100 to 300 feet or so along Main Street, he was on a quest and definitely forward, all the way there, and all the way back. Like Mystic though, he never pulls on the line. Rocky, left behind in his paddock, was more concerned about Amadeo being out on the road without adult supervision than Amadeo was. When we finished, I turned Amadeo into Rocky’s paddock. He loves Rocky and loves being in that paddock. I then turned the rest of my herd out across Main Street to graze and play with Journey. Antares hung out with Journey, apparently unconcerned about Amadeo. Amadeo realized they had gone without him and came over to complain to me. Rocky was adorable, the way he cuddled next to Amadeo, assuring him that he was not truly alone. Amadeo was not sure, BUT he was not so distressed that he ran the fence line and he was still happy to share hay with Rocky so I think he will manage the few hours of turnout before he returns to Antares. It is a start, learning to face the world on your own and find contentment. We all have to do it, even Amadeo.
