Enthrall yourself with the Paika War Dance and immerse in this exciting dance form. The word paika comes from the Sanskrit word “padatika” meaning infantry. "Akhada" or akhara refers to a training hall or a school. Paika akhadas in former times served as the training schools of the peasant militia in Odisha. Kharavela of ancient Kalinga(Odisha) relied on the military might of the paika in his campaigns. The paikas reached their zenith of power during the Gajapati Dynasty and were known as far as Indonesia Today's paika akhadas are used for practicing the traditional physical exercises in addition to the PAIKA DANCE, a performance art which has a martial art character with rhythmic movements and weapons being hit in tune to the beating of drums. It incorporates acrobatic maneuvres and use of the khanda (straight sword), patta (guantlet-sword), sticks, and other weapons. The main purpose behind this dance is to enhance physical excitement and to develop inner courage.
