"Virtua Fighter 2" (Japanese: バーチャファイター2, Hepburn: Bācha Faitā Tsū) is a 3D VS. fighting game released in 1994 by Sega for arcades. It is the second entry in the Virtua Fighter series, following the original 1993 game. Developed by Yu Suzuki’s AM2 team, the title was built on Sega’s Model 2 hardware, which offered a major leap in graphical performance. After its arcade debut, the game was ported to the Sega Saturn in November 1995, with additional versions appearing on other platforms later. The game was widely praised for its gameplay innovations and cutting-edge visuals. It introduced texture-mapped 3D character models and was among the first titles to incorporate motion capture animation. Virtua Fighter 2 became a massive arcade success, selling over 40,000 cabinets worldwide and ranking as one of Sega’s best-selling arcade releases. The Saturn port was also a hit, especially in Japan, where it sold more than 2 million units. The series continued with Virtua Fighter 3 in 1996. Like its predecessor, Virtua Fighter 2 is a 3D fighting game where players select a character and battle through a series of opponents. Matches are won either by depleting the opponent’s health or knocking them out of the square “ring.” Standard matches are played in a best-of-three format, though this can be adjusted. Controls consist of an eight-way joystick for movement and three buttons—guard, punch, and kick—used in combination to execute attacks. Unique to this installment, arena sizes could be customized, ranging from tiny platforms to expansive 82-meter stages. Health meters could also be set to infinity, allowing for practice sessions or mock sumo-style matches where victory depended solely on ring-outs. The roster includes all nine fighters from the original game, each with styles inspired by real-world martial arts. While many moves are shared across characters, the sequel expanded the move sets with counter-attacks and throw escapes, requiring quick reflexes. Two new fighters were introduced: Shun Di: A Chinese master of drunken fist. Lion Rafale: A French fighter using praying mantis kung fu. Both newcomers featured “axis strikes,” maneuvers that allowed them to sidestep attacks, emphasizing the game’s 3D mechanics. The arcade release contained no in-game story sequences or character endings. However, supporting materials such as the Saturn manual provided context: the battles take place in a global fighting tournament organized by the shadowy J6 syndicate. Their goal is to refine their cyborg fighter, Dural, who serves as the game’s final boss and mimics moves from other characters.
