Welcome back, Journey family! Today we’re walking through Matthew 17 — a chapter that may feel like a collection of stories at first, but is actually carefully arranged to show us two big truths: Jesus’ identity and Jesus’ mission. 👉 View our pastors "How to Read the Bible and Actually Enjoy It. In Matthew 17 we see Jesus revealed as God’s beloved Son — and God the Son — greater than Moses and Elijah, with authority over demons, disease, and even religious systems. And we also see His mission repeated clearly: He must suffer, die, and rise again. –––––– 📖 What we see in Matthew 17: ✅ 1) The Transfiguration: A Glimpse of Glory (Matthew 17:1–8) Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain and is transfigured—His glory becomes visible. Moses and Elijah appear, pointing to Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. Then the Father speaks: “This is my beloved Son… listen to Him.” Key takeaway: Jesus isn’t becoming glorious—He’s revealing the glory He already has. ✅ 2) Coming Down the Mountain: The Cross Still Comes First (Matthew 17:9–13) Jesus tells them not to share the vision until after He rises from the dead—because glory without the cross is an incomplete story. The disciples ask about Elijah, and Jesus explains that Elijah’s “forerunner role” was fulfilled in John the Baptist. Key takeaway: The mountaintop prepares us for the cross—it doesn’t replace it. ✅ 3) Faith in the Valley: Jesus Delivers a Boy (Matthew 17:14–20) A desperate father kneels and calls Jesus “Lord,” begging for mercy for his son. The disciples can’t cast the demon out, and Jesus confronts their unbelief. Jesus reminds them: mustard-seed faith can move mountains—not because faith is powerful, but because God is. Key takeaway: The issue isn’t the size of our faith—it’s the object of our faith. ✅ 4) Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection Again (Matthew 17:22–23) Jesus plainly tells them He will be betrayed, killed, and raised on the third day. The disciples are deeply distressed—because God’s plan is often different than what we would choose. Key takeaway: Following Jesus includes trusting Him even when His plan is costly. ✅ 5) The Temple Tax: Freedom + Wisdom (Matthew 17:24–27) Jesus teaches that “sons are free” — God’s Son is not obligated to support the temple system. Yet He chooses to pay anyway to avoid unnecessary offense. Then comes the wild moment: a coin in a fish’s mouth—God provides what’s needed. Key takeaway: We don’t compromise truth, but we avoid unnecessary obstacles that keep others from hearing it. –––––– 🔥 Big Themes in Matthew 17: • Jesus’ glory is real — and so is the cross • Listening to Jesus matters more than capturing a moment • Faith is about who you trust, not how strong you feel • Jesus has authority over darkness and brokenness • Wisdom knows when to stand firm and when to avoid needless offense –––––– 🤔 Reflection Questions: 1. Where do I need to “listen to Him” more closely right now? 2. Am I chasing mountaintop moments instead of trusting Jesus in the valley? 3. What does mustard-seed faith look like in my current situation? 4. Am I trusting Jesus only when it’s inspiring—or also when it’s costly? 5. Could my tone or approach be creating unnecessary obstacles for someone else? 🙏 Prayer focus: “Jesus, help me trust You in the valley, listen to You fully, and follow You even when it’s hard.” Thanks for studying Matthew 17 with us! #BibleStudy #Matthew17 #JourneyChurch #Transfiguration #MustardSeedFaith #Jesus #GospelOfMatthew
