Welcome back, Journey Church! Today we finish the Gospel of Matthew with Chapter 28 — the climax of the story: the resurrection of Jesus and the Great Commission. This chapter picks up on Easter morning after the death and burial of Jesus (Matthew 27). What happens next is the foundation of our faith: the tomb is empty, Jesus is alive, and the mission of the Church is launched. –––––– 📖 What we see in Matthew 28: ✅ 1) The Empty Tomb (Matthew 28:1–8) Mary Magdalene and “the other Mary” go to the tomb early Sunday morning. A great earthquake shakes the ground. An angel of the Lord rolls the stone away and sits on it. The guards are terrified and collapse in fear. The angel announces the best news in history: “He isn’t here. He is risen from the dead, just as He said would happen.” Then the angel gives a clear instruction: Go tell the disciples. Jesus is going ahead to Galilee. You will see Him there. Key theme: *Jesus kept His word — He rose exactly as promised.* ✅ 2) Jesus Appears to the Women (Matthew 28:9–10) On their way, the women meet Jesus Himself. They fall at His feet and worship Him. Jesus repeats the message: “Don’t be afraid. Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee.” Key theme: *fear and joy collide when resurrection becomes real.* They expected a dead man to stay dead. Instead, they encounter the living Christ. ✅ 3) The Cover-Up Story (Matthew 28:11–15) Matthew uniquely highlights what happens next: Some guards report the events to the religious leaders. A meeting is called. A bribe is offered. A false story is spread: “His disciples came at night and stole the body while we slept.” Matthew makes the point clearly: This lie spread widely among the Jews and was still being repeated. Key theme: *even from day one, people tried to explain away the resurrection.* But the truth stands: Jesus is alive. ✅ 4) The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16–20) The disciples go to Galilee as instructed. They see Jesus and worship Him — yet Matthew notes: “Some doubted.” Jesus responds with authority, mission, and promise: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…” “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Key theme: *Resurrection isn’t just something we celebrate — it’s a mission we live.* –––––– 🔥 Big Takeaways from Matthew 28: • The resurrection is not a metaphor — it’s the foundation of our hope • Jesus does what dead men don’t do: He rises in victory • Worship is the right response to the living Christ • God’s mission is global: all nations, all peoples • Discipleship is the work of the Church: go, baptize, teach • We are not sent alone — Jesus promises His presence “always” –––––– 🤔 Reflection Questions: 1) Where do I need resurrection hope in my life right now? 2) Do I live like Jesus is alive — or like He’s still in the tomb? 3) Who is God calling me to disciple, encourage, or invest in? 4) How can I “go” right where I already live, work, and spend my days? 5) Do I believe Jesus is truly with me — even when I feel weak or uncertain? 🙏 Prayer focus today: “Jesus, thank You for the resurrection. Make us a people who worship, obey, and go. Use our lives to make disciples, and help us trust Your promise: You are with us always.” Thank you for taking this whole journey through Matthew with us. Don’t stop here — keep going. Keep reading. Keep listening. Keep following. #BibleStudy #Matthew28 #Resurrection #Easter #GreatCommission #JourneyChurch #JesusIsAlive #Discipleship #Hope
