Welcome back to our Journey through Matthew. Today we’re in Matthew 26—and it’s heavy, beautiful, and holy ground. 👉 View our pastors "How to Read the Bible and Actually Enjoy It. Try This Simple Framework" video here: • This Simple Framework Turned My Bible Read... 👉 Download the free SOAP guide here: https://www.mattdawson.tv/read-your-b... This chapter carries us through the beginning of Jesus’ suffering: • the plot to kill Him • Mary’s extravagant worship • Judas’ betrayal • the Last Supper • Gethsemane • the arrest • the trial • and Peter’s denial And through it all, we see a Savior who knows what it is to dread the future, grieve losses, and still fully surrender to the Father’s will. –––––– 📖 What we see in Matthew 26: ✅ 1) The Plot + The Plan (Matthew 26:1–5) Jesus calmly says the Passover is coming… and He will be delivered up to be crucified. At the same time, Caiaphas and the religious leaders secretly gather and scheme to arrest Jesus “by stealth.” Key takeaway: This isn’t plan B. Jesus knows what’s coming—and walks toward it. ✅ 2) Extravagant Worship vs. Hidden Corruption (Matthew 26:6–16) In Bethany, Mary anoints Jesus with extremely expensive ointment—extravagant devotion, poured out in love. The disciples criticize it as “waste,” but Jesus calls it beautiful and says it prepares Him for burial. Then—immediately—Judas goes and sells Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Key takeaway: In the same room: worship and betrayal. Jesus keeps both close as He fulfills the Father’s plan. ✅ 3) The Last Supper: Body Broken, Blood Shed (Matthew 26:17–30) At the table Jesus announces: “One of you will betray me.” The disciples ask, “Is it I, Lord?” Judas asks, “Is it I, Rabbi?” (Teacher—not Lord.) Then Jesus institutes communion: “This is my body… this is my blood of the covenant… poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Key takeaway: Jesus gives a physical sign for a spiritual reality: forgiveness will cost Him everything. And shockingly—everyone is invited to the table… even Judas. ✅ 4) The Coming Collapse: Peter’s Promise, Jesus’ Prediction (Matthew 26:31–35) Jesus tells them they will all fall away. Peter insists he never will. Jesus tells him plainly: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Key takeaway: Jesus knows our weakness—and still keeps walking toward the cross. ✅ 5) Gethsemane: Crushing Weight + Complete Surrender (Matthew 26:36–46) Jesus goes to the garden—where olives are crushed for oil— and He is crushed under sorrow. He prays three times: “Let this cup pass from me… nevertheless, not my will, but yours.” The disciples can’t stay awake. Jesus bears the weight alone with the Father. Key takeaway: Jesus pours out His heart and still submits. This is what surrender looks like. ✅ 6) The Betrayal Kiss + Jesus’ Restraint (Matthew 26:47–56) Judas arrives and identifies Jesus with a kiss—calling Him “Rabbi.” Jesus calls him “friend” (not intimate friend—an unsettling, distant word). Peter pulls a sword. Jesus stops him: “I could call down legions of angels… but the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Key takeaway: Jesus is not powerless—He is purposeful. He chooses the path that saves us. ✅ 7) The Trial: Truth Declared, Death Demanded (Matthew 26:57–68) False witnesses fail to stick. Then Jesus is asked directly if He is the Christ. Jesus answers with authority: “You will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power…” They call it blasphemy and condemn Him. Key takeaway: Jesus is condemned not for lies—but for truth. ✅ 8) Peter’s Denial + Bitter Tears (Matthew 26:69–75) Three accusations. Three denials. A rooster crows exactly when Jesus said it would. Peter remembers… and weeps bitterly. Key takeaway: Peter’s failure is not the end of his story—and ours isn’t either. Repentance is real. Restoration is coming. –––––– 🔥 Big Themes in Matthew 26: • Worship poured out • Betrayal for profit • Jesus’ sovereign awareness • Communion and covenant • The loneliness of suffering • “Not my will, but yours” • Jesus’ restraint and obedience • Failure, repentance, and future restoration –––––– 🤔 Reflection Questions: 1. Do I worship Jesus with “leftovers”… or with costly devotion? 2. Where am I tempted to trade loyalty to Jesus for comfort, approval, or control? 3. Can I pray honestly AND surrender like Jesus: “Not my will, but yours”? 4. When I fail, do I run from God—or run to Him for repentance and restoration? 🙏 Prayer: “Jesus, give me Mary’s devotion, not Judas’ betrayal. Teach me surrender in Gethsemane moments. And when I fail, lead me back to You.” Thanks for studying Matthew 26 with us. #BibleStudy #Matthew26 #JourneyChurch #Jesus #Gethsemane #LastSupper #Judas #Peter #PassionWeek
