The ‘secret’ of this bassline is in playing most of the notes short (staccato). That’s what makes the bassline groove and it fits very well with the song. Besides playing the short (staccato/muted) notes it’s very important that you play the groove (for instance bar 6) with a ¾ quarter note on the first beat (note = C) followed by a sixteenth note (also C). Playing the groove this way gives it a laid back feel. 10cc is known for their excellent production of songs. Listen for instance at the bars 37-40 of the interlude. In the background you can hear the ascending lines. For instance notes G-A-Bb-C in bar 37 and the notes C-Eb-F-G in bar 38. It’s the question whether these notes are being played on the lower guitarstrings or on bass. I’ve chosen to play them on bass to make the basspart more interesting. This also the case in Verse 2. The quarter/sixteenth lick are being played in the background. But these are wonderful licks to play on bass! I’ve played the lick in bar 72 ascending and descending. The bass plays the descending line on the record and the guitar the ascending line. But I had fun with playing both licks on bass. You can choose which line you’d like to play! In bar 68 there’s a really fast lick. It has taken me some time to get it right, but it’s great to play! Important here is that you play the note D on an open string. This way you’ve got time to move your left hand to the first position. Enjoy this fun song!
