The Children’s Home of Stockton look like an idyllic college campus, but on these grounds that great transformations happen for struggling youth. Joelle Gomez, CEO: "These kids have gone through so much serious trauma. They were presenting behavioral issues, they are the kids that are often throwaways and neglected, the abused. When they come here, it’s that second chance for a better future, a promising future. It’s through our work that they can do it, they can overcome what they’ve experienced." 7 cottages house the 52 students who live on campus. An additional 56 students attend the day program, going to school, getting that extra attention needed to lift them up. Joelle: "It’s helping these kids learn all the basic life skills to be independent or unite with family. It’s giving them an array of therapies, individual and group sessions. Oscar, student: "We wake up at 6 to do chores and prepare for school. Schools starts at 8. I was kind of confused. My first time being in a group home and following all these rules that I never really followed outside. We cook, we do laundry. We clean. On Saturdays we clean our rooms and on Sundays we do chore majors like deep cleaning. It has actually helped me a lot. I became more independent. Now I wake up, do my chores, do my laundry, I cook. We have to cook for everybody. And that helped me a lot because now I’m going to be able to live by myself, I’ll be able to cook and clean and take care of myself.' Anger issues landed Julia at the Children’s Home. She’s now a successful college student well on her way to a bright future. She, like so many of the other students here give the staff a lot of credit. Julia, former student: "Mr. Dutra was like my uncle. He really saw something in me that other people didn’t see, and he always kept going. He never gave up on me." Alex, former student: "One of the staff had just gotten 2 bachelor’s degrees and he was very satisfied. I didn’t know what it was so I talked to him about it and he was explaining to me how education can change somebody." Alex was a ward of the state when he came to the Children’s Home of Stockton. Today he’s a UCBerkeley student studying social welfare with an emphasis on international studies and foster youth advocacy. I can honestly say that I don’t think I’d be here at Berkeley without the help. They still continue to support me to this day. They really changed my life and they made me be happy to be here as well as to look back to who I was and just laugh." As for that beautiful voice and performance by student Masha. She arrived at the Children’s Home of Stockton just 6 months ago riddled with so much social anxiety that she was hospitalized and regularly missed school. Christine/Masha’s Mom: "She had lost hope." And so after transferring to the Children’s home of Stockton Masha’s transformation, like so many children before her, has begun…. Christine/Masha’s Mom: "I’m just so grateful."
