We hear from Yamila de Oliveira, the director of UNLV/CSUN Preschool, a fully inclusive program created in partnership with the Clark County School District. The preschool serves children of all abilities, while also giving future special education teachers hands-on training in an inclusive learning environment. We get to see how young children learn, grow and support each other, and how teachers use differentiated instruction to meet each child’s needs. The preschool also includes staff members who have disabilities, giving children the opportunity to learn alongside peers and adults who reflect the diversity of their community. Sofia also talks with Chloe, a UNLV Project FOCUS student who works at the preschool. Chloe shares her passion for education, her experience with ABA therapy and what she’s learned from working with children from many different backgrounds and abilities. She explains that teaching is about more than patience — it’s about helping children understand their emotions and build confidence. Chloe also shares her own story, including her international travel experiences and the pride she takes in pursuing her dreams and making a positive impact. And in her words, she truly “hit the jackpot in the mother lottery.” About the show: Young actress Sofia Sanchez explores Nevada, highlighting inspiring stories of people with disabilities living their best lives, while also sharing expert insights on independent living, accessibility, budgeting, nutrition, and more! We’re Hittin’ the Road with Nevada TRIP! This powerful tool is helping students with disabilities, their parents, and educators navigate the process from elementary to middle to high school and beyond to adult life and independence.
