Sofia meets with Hillary, a teacher with the Washoe County School District’s Transition Academy — a vocational training program that helps young adults with disabilities build real-world job skills. Hillary works as a job coach, partnering with local businesses and supporting students as they learn on the job. She helps them practice everything from receiving feedback to increasing their work pace to following instructions, all skills that prepare them for success after high school. Hillary says this is her favorite job in 18 years of teaching. And the best part? When a student gets hired, the whole class celebrates with a party. She then talks with some of the students in the program: • Andrea, who loves working with animals at Andelin Family Farms, on what she does as part of her internship • Spencer, who’s doing an internship at Smiling for Hope Pizza. He talks about how fun it is learning about where these kinds of things can lead you. • Theresa, who is also learning skills at Smiling for Hope Pizza. She and Sofia agree on their love of being hard workers and pepperoni pizza. About the show: Young actress Sofia Sanchez explores Nevada, highlighting inspiring stories of people with disabilities living their best lives, while also sharing expert insights on independent living, accessibility, budgeting, nutrition, and more!
