I have decided to record myself every week to track my progress and identify my most significant areas for improvement, which, for now, are in every category! 🤪 However, I have already relearned how to read music notation, the basics of finger articulation, and breath control with the help of my whistle instructor, Ben Walker, over the past six months. ❤️🎶 This year, I will continue practicing my SFAPEE routine (Scales, Finger Articulation Pattern Exercises, and Etudes) before working on my daily Mary Bergin's Irish Tin Whistle Tutorial with my High D whistles. Then, I plan to reward myself by working on a new slow air each week (or so). I want to become more familiar with different traditional music modes (Dorian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Ionian). This is at least my current plan for 2026! 👍😁 To be clear, I do not intend to participate in Irish traditional sessions. My goal is to use the whistle as an accompaniment instrument alongside my wife's hammered dulcimer in larger folk settings, including broader Atlantic traditional music and popular songs. I value the ornamentation I will learn from Mary Bergin and want to honor Irish traditional music by studying the history of my little instrument's culture. Still, I believe it’s important to clearly say that my goals differ from those of many others who play the Irish tin whistle.
