Okay, look...I know everyone loves Polites, but I had to talk about it, because I think it's important. I swear I'm not just engaging in Polites slander without cause -- it's really just a note that I feel work could be done in lyrics and potentially in delivery to make it more obvious just how close Polites and Odysseus are, especially if we're going to work under the assumption that his death deeply affects our protagonist. (And this is assuming that everything in the saga albums is the entirety of the musical without any missing spoken scenes in between that provide moments like that.) That being said: I'd personally swap him out with Agamemnon in this moment to provide the emotional gut punch and contrast of what happened to him when he finished his nostos and returned home to what Odysseus desperately wishes for (aka: finishing his nostos in the form of a happy reunion). Especially when he then next meets the shade of his mother, who he hadn't even known had passed, and is about to meet Tiresias and (should we follow The Odyssey) be told that what we're going to suffer more to get home and even IF we get home, we'll be personally changed AND we'll find yet more suffering due to what's happening at Ithaca. Let's not forget the driving force of Odysseus: GET HOME TO ITHACA. This informs everything he does, and I think it'd be great drama to give him an example of a "great Greek hero" -- the guy he followed in war for the past decade -- who came home to tragedy. If we're gonna push this idea of "when does the man become the monster?" aka "how far will you go?" then I think having that dramatic parallel would serve the story and themes far more than Polites' little moment as it stands now, because I think we (ironically) need more of him to better understand why he haunts the narrative (puns intended) in the way that he does. Again, just my opinion, but in this current state of the musical, I don't buy what Jorge is trying to sell me. Other characters mentioning him in throwaway lyrics doesn't feel like enough, as opposed to lyrically digging into this apparent grief and distress at his loss specifically and how Odysseus feels about it. But, hey, that's what you get with concept albums: they need tweaking and adjustments and they stand as initial scaffolding to which you add reinforcements etc etc I need to stop making metaphors lol. Basically a concept album is your prototype, which you'd then usually take to a workshop or something to iron out any remaining kinks and get fresh eyes/perspective on it to tighten any loose screws...again I should stop with metaphors 'cause I'm getting lost in them. Anywho: LET'S GO SEE THAT BLIND PROPHET (since he won't see us) and as always It's All Just My Opinion (TM) --- I have a Patreon under construction, so if you would at all like to support me and/or donate to Peg's snack fund, you can do so here: / madnbooks https://ko-fi.com/madnbooks
