The expressway, running 76.5 kilometers, is one of the key transport projects in Xinjiang and also an important route in east Xinjiang running from the north to the south of the Tianshan Mountains. The G575 highway now connects itself with three major land transport routes including a national-level highway and two expressways, becoming a significant land transport route in the region. East Tianshan Tunnel on the G575, extending about 11.7 kilometers, is the longest tunnel in Xinjiang and is deemed as one of the most difficult projects in China. In the construction of the G575 over the past five years, the workers overcame diverse difficulties like low temperature, high altitude and the complex geological structure in completing the construction of the highway as scheduled, providing convenience for local transportation and residents' travels. The highway now runs through the Tianshan Mountains through the tunnel, saving the travel time and reducing negative effects of the weather on motor vehicle driving. "The construction of expressways in the Xinjiang region is intended to effectively link the south and north of the Tianshan Mountains, namely link the economic belt north of the Tianshan Mountains to the zone south of the mountains, to promote joint interaction between the flow of transportation, the flow of the economy and the flow of human resources," said Bai Jianguo, director of the Hami Municipal Department of Transport.
