Emotional farewell as mortal remains of Shillong MP taken to Nongsder residence

A large number of supporters and residents gathered along the roadside in Mawlai on Friday to pay their last respects as the mortal remains of Shillong Lok Sabha MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon were taken to his residence at Nongsder Umiam. The emotional turnout reflected the strong personal connection the late parliamentarian had built with people across the constituency. Supporters lined both sides of National Highway-6 along the Shillong–Guwahati stretch, describing the moment as a rare public response for a sitting Member of Parliament. Many noted that his simplicity, accessibility, and down-to-earth nature had deeply touched the hearts of the people. Residents also observed that, unlike the common perception where many MPs representing the Shillong Parliamentary constituency remain mostly in Delhi after their election and are seen only closer to the next polls, the late leader maintained a strong presence on the ground and regularly interacted with the public. Earlier, a large number of people had gathered at his mother’s residence at Pohkseh to offer their tributes. Among those who visited were, Deputy Chief Mininister, Prestone Tynsong, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma and former minister Ampareen Lyngdoh. A prayer service was held at the mother’s residence before the mortal remains were taken to his residence at Nongsder. His final rites will be held on Saturday.
