In this clip an attendee asked how to differentiate between insulin resistance and insulin deficiency in patients with diabetes mellitus. Insulin deficiency occurs when insulin-producing cells of the pancreas are damaged or destroyed due to which insulin production is stopped or reduced significantly. This can occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Insulin resistance is a feature of type 2 diabetes mellitus and involves a reduced response to insulin by insulin-sensitive tissues and cells. There are a number of mechanisms leading to insulin resistance all of which are not yet understood. In short, the answer to this question is by measuring the C-peptide levels in the blood which are increased in insulin resistance and are decreased in insulin deficiency. C-peptide is co-secreted with insulin in equimolar amounts and hence can identify endogenous insulin release. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join this channel to get access to perks: Sign up now on our website at https://members.drnajeeblectures.com/... / @doctornajeeb Follow us on Facebook :- / drnajeeb Follow us on Instagram :- / drnajeeblectures
