Riga, Latvia 🇱🇻… Sandwiched by Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south, Latvia is often assimilated to its neighbouring Baltic states, mistakenly. Riga was founded as a port town in 1201, and it remained one of the key centers of the Hanseatic League from the 13th to the 15th century. Situated at the crossroads of east and west, and close to Scandinavia, Riga was occupied for most of its rich history (Swedes, Germans, Soviets, Germans again, and then Russians) until finally gaining independence in 1990 and boasts creating the tradition of decorating Christmas trees (1515). The city also repurposed five giant Zeppelin halls / hangers — purchased from Germany in 1915 at end of Workd War I — that now compose an amazing central food market. We can’t wait to go back! P.S. the rye garlic bread there is out of this world and you have to try their cocktails made with the national liquor: Black Balsam (currant is our favorite flavor, but the chocolate mint is a close second). Riga (/ˈriːɡə/)[a] is the capital and largest city of Latvia. Home to 605,802 inhabitants, the city accounts for a third of Latvia's total population. The population of Riga metropolitan area, which stretches beyond the city limits, is estimated at 860,142 (as of 2023). The city lies on the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the Daugava river where it meets the Baltic Sea. Riga's territory covers 307.17 km2 (118.60 sq mi) and lies 1–10 m (3.3–32.8 ft) above sea level, on a flat and sandy plain. Riga was founded in 1201 and is a former Hanseatic League member. Riga's historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture and 19th century wooden architecture. Riga was the European Capital of Culture in 2014, along with Umeå in Sweden. Riga hosted the 2006 NATO Summit, the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, 2013 World Women's Curling Championship and IIHF Men's World Ice Hockey Championships in 2006, 2021 and 2023. It is home to the European Union's office of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). In 2017, it was named the European Region of Gastronomy. In 2019, Riga received over 1.4 million foreign visitors. The city is served by Riga International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in the Baltic states. Riga is a member of Eurocities, the Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC) and Union of Capitals of the European Union (UCEU). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riga) The city canal is an artificial watercourse in the center of the city of Riga on the right bank of the Daugava. It is 3.2 kilometers long, about 2 meters deep, with 16 bridges of various widths . It starts at the Central Market above the Railway Bridge . The channel has no drop and regular flow. Locks have been installed at both ends of the canal to prevent wind surges, and it is surrounded by canalside greenery created in the 19th century. (https://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pils%C4...) Bastejkalns Park (German: Basteiberg) is a spacious park on the eastern edge of the old town of Latvian capital Riga. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastejk...) The Daugava (Latgalian: Daugova; German: Düna) or Western Dvina (Russian: Западная Двина, romanized: Zapadnaya Dvina; Belarusian: Заходняя Дзвіна; Estonian: Väina; Finnish: Väinäjoki) is a large river rising in the Valdai Hills of Russia that flows through Belarus and Latvia into the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea. It rises close to the source of the Volga. It is 1,020 km (630 mi) in length, of which 352 km (219 mi) are in Latvia and 325 km (202 mi) are in Russia. It is a westward-flowing river, tracing out a great south-bending curve as it passes through northern Belarus.
