Top 300 - The Best Rap Songs of All Time (2022)

Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music, is a genre of popular music that originated in New York City in the 1970s. It consists of stylized rhythmic music (usually built around drum beats) that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. What makes a hip hop song great? Everybody has their own taste in music, and hip hop has maintained its status as the most popular genre in the United States for roughly half a decade. Today, we count down the 300 best hip hop songs of all time. Below are some notes and the methodology we had while crafting this list. This was our methodology: -How does this work express its main ideas? -What emotions does it create by doing so & how are they explored? -What does it say & what kind of impact does it have on the listener? -Does it add a new perspective or idea? -How does it fulfill these ideas through its musical performance? -What makes these specific hip hop songs great? -What does the overall expression amount to? -How well does the act perform on the song? -Technique, creativity, production, structure, and overall stylistic craftsmanship Things we DID NOT factor in: -Replay value -Conditions when the songs were made -Streaming numbers or Billboard chart placements Impact is a flawed metric to us; and is our least important criteria by far. Restrictions: -Three to five songs per artist; excluding groups -No cloud rap/trap songs unless they’re conscious and/or respected by older and younger listeners -No covers of songs -No diss tracks; subliminals are eligible however. -No current year (2022) songs -No instrumental songs (because we're weird and it didn’t make sense for it to fit with other songs) -Tyler The Creator’s “IGOR”, Kanye West’s “808 & Heartbreak”, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!”, & Mac Miller’s “Circles” are not hip hop albums in our opinion; so no songs from these albums will appear As usual, the order is mostly a formality; only the top 15 is truly in order. Just because a song lands “low” does not mean it’s “bad”. All of the lists on the channel are about celebrating hip hop and the amazing music we’ve been blessed with. Every song here is incredible. We will most likely update this list down the line. We completely respect it if anybody disagrees. We all have our own opinions, tastes, lists, and metrics; and this one is ours.
