Top 300 - Best Rap Songs of All Time, Part 2 (2025)

Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music, is a genre of popular music that originated in New York City in the 1970s. It consists of stylized rhythmic music (usually built around drum beats) that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. What makes a hip hop song great? Everyone’s got their own answer. This is our second “Top 300 Rap Songs” list — not a remake. All 300 songs here are different from the first list. That one’s linked below and at the end of the video. Don’t expect this to be better than the first. We started with nearly 3,000 songs and cut it down to 300. This was our methodology: -How does this work express its main ideas? -What emotions does it create by doing so & how are they explored? -What does it say & what kind of impact does it have on the listener? -Does it add a new perspective or idea? -How does it fulfill these ideas through its musical performance? -What makes these specific hip hop songs great? -What does the overall expression amount to? -How well does the act perform on the song? -Technique, creativity, production, structure, and overall stylistic craftsmanship Things we DID NOT factor in: -Influence, iconography, status, impact -”Relatability” -Replay value -Conditions when the songs were made -Streaming numbers, sales, or Billboard chart placements Restrictions: -Three songs per artist; excluding groups (this made it more of a challenge and more varied) -No cloud rap/trap songs unless they’re conscious and/or respected by older and younger listeners -No covers of songs -No diss tracks; subliminals are eligible however -No current year (2025) songs -No instrumental songs (because we're weird and it didn’t make sense for it to fit with other songs) -No remixes of songs from the first list -Tyler The Creator’s “IGOR”, Kanye West’s “808 & Heartbreak”, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!”, & Mac Miller’s “Circles” are not hip hop albums in our opinion; so no songs from these albums will appear Only the top 25 is truly ranked. The rest isn't set in stone. Every song here is great, and it’s placement doesn’t inherently mean it’s worse or bad. We added a lot of Easter eggs.
