For emerging methane sensors, much of the existing single-blind controlled methane release testing has focused on concentrated point sources (mostly for logistical convenience). In practice, many methane sources, such as landfills, are spread out over wide areas, producing methane plumes with different characteristics than point sources. Daves' work provides key insights into the capabilities and limitations of multiple methane-sensing systems when applied to more diffuse sources. Dave Risk is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, leading the Flux Lab gas detection and measurement group. Dave's interests lie in the measurement of gas emission from soils, isotope tracers, and sensor techniques. Some of this expertise is applied to natural ecosystems, and he has projects both in the Arctic and Antarctic, focused on soil microbial dynamics in cold ecosystems. The other portion of his research relates to the energy industry, for which he develops sensor techniques to detect fugitive emissions (gas leaks) in energy developments.
