The Clover Hill Tavern is not only the oldest building in the village of Appomattox Court House, but also the only other building used by the armies in relation to the surrender. In order to protect the surrendered Confederates as they made their way home to every state in the South, it is agreed that the Federal army will issue parole passes for every man. All of these passes are printed on army presses in the tavern. These small slips of paper could also be used by the surrendered soldiers to obtain free food and transportation home from the Union army on the way home. The next video about the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road and the surrender ceremony for the infantry troops of the Army of Northern Virginia will be posted on April 12th at 9 AM. These videos will be posted on the park's YouTube channel, but links will also be available through the park's Facebook and Twitter pages. Use the hashtag #APX152 to follow events occurring at the park related to the 152nd Anniversary of the battles and surrender of General Lee's army.
