Discontinuities (i.e., joints in rock mass) decrease the overall strength of rock mass, and thus they need to be carefully examined during field investigations. It is important to know their direction and inclination in rock mass, and this video will explain how to measure dip (inclination/angle) and dip direction of discontinuities. Dip direction shows the orientation of the normal to the discontinuity plane against North (N). It is expressed by an angle from 0° to 360°. Dip or dip angle represents the degree of inclination; it varies between 0° and 90°. Strike is the alignment or run, which is the bearing of an imaginary horizontal line in the inclined plane. In this video, one of the measurements is as follows: dip direction is 50 degrees, and dip is 78 degrees. We record this data as 050/78, where three digits (in this case 050) are used for the dip direction. For example, if dip is 10 degrees and dip direction is 5 degrees, we will write 005/10.
