(5 Aug 1996) Spanish/Nat The Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos has ended a one-week conference against capitalism in Chiapas by calling for a worldwide referendum against neo-liberalism. Some three-thousand delegates from 42 countries attended the Zapatista conference, amongst them international celebrities like Danielle Mitterrand. At the end of the "First Intercontinental Encounter against Neo-liberalism and for Humanity", the rebels said they planned to hold a second gathering in Europe next year. Subcomandante Marcos appeared once again in La Realidad, Chiapas. This time he helped to close the "First Intercontinental Encounter against Neo-liberalism and for Humanity". In front of nearly three-thousand delegates he read his final report. The Zapatista leader asked for a worldwide referendum in December against economic liberalisation. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) It is not possible for Neo-liberalism to become a reality in the world without the death argument that institutional and private armies provide, without the gag that jails offer, without the coups and murders that the military and the police carry out. National repression is the necessary premise for the globalisation imposed by Neo-liberalism SUPER CAPTION: Subcomandante Marcos, Zapatista leader The communique also proposed a worldwide resistance net "for humanity" as the way to defeat the established power. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) We are not the exhaust valve for the rebels that can destabilisze Neo-liberalism. It is not true that our existence as rebels legitimises the established power. Power fears us, that's why it persecutes and surround us, that's why it puts us into jail and it kills us. What we really are is a possibility that can defeat power and make it disappear. SUPER CAPTION: Subcomandante Marcos, Zapatista leader During the one-week gathering, 300 papers were discussed on five different issues, ranging from the abolition of the U-N to the creation of a Zapatista contemporary art museum. Rebel sympathisers from 42 nations also challenged the contention that a "global marketplace" expanded by trade pacts - such as the NAFTA agreement - would raise living standards in less-developed nations. Zapatistas say the trade pacts benefit primarily foreign investors. At the end of the gathering, the rebels said they planned to take their ideas on the road to spread their critique of capitalism throughout Mexico and Europe. The Zapatistas plan to visit Europe at the end of 1997 for a second international gathering, like the one that ended Saturday in the Chiapas jungle.
