(29 Jul 1996) Spanish/Nat The leader of Mexico's rebel Zapatista's group has widened his campaign against capitalism. Subcomandante Marcos has organized an event in Chiapas, Mexico to mark the start of his expanded efforts. He calls it "The First Intercontinental Gathering against Neoliberalism and for Humanity." The charismatic guerrilla leader expects to attract several celebrities to Chiapas this week to highlight the event. The army was vigilant in Chiapas, as indigenous people from all over the state walked towards Oventic, a small village considered the symbol of the Zapatista uprising. It was chosen by Subcomandante Marcos to host the first such gathering. Not even tropical storm "Douglas" could stop Marco's followers and the Zapatista leader's ability to attract international attention is being made evident once more. Some intellectuals were already there, two days ahead the arrival of Subcomandante Marcos himself, who is expected by Tuesday or Wednesday. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) The Zapatista movement right now has a tremendous ability to attract people from all over the world. And it is good that the Mexican government is aware of this fact. This is a movement that went from local to regional to national and now it is international. SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Galiano, Uruguayan writer Some 2-thousand 500 foreigners were invited via Internet. Amongst indigenous crafts shops, AK-47 rifles, folk music and balaclavas, delegates danced and voted the issues that would be on the gathering's agenda. The debates have been classified into politics, economy, culture, society and indigenous people, all "under the neoliberal yoke". SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) People from many countries have gathered in this place. We speak different languages, come from different backgrounds. But we all are trying to think together, and feel together so that we all can speak together. SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Galiano, Uruguayan writer The gathering is expected to continue until next Saturday.
