Have you mastered the 5 in-position pentatonic shapes yet? If not, then why not? They are extremely functional and provide a vital piece of your foundation for understanding the neck. They can be expanded into the all important major scale shapes and make those easier to learn. Each of the 5 shapes has it’s own character, and once you get comfortable with playing all 5 you’ll not only have a better understanding of the neck, but you’ll also unlock new areas and new ideas to implement into your playing. So, if you haven’t mastered them, let me show you a musical way to work on it so that you can become more fluent and take your playing up a level. In today’s lesson we’ll dive into the 5 shapes, not in a dry technical workout, but applying a rhythm and pattern that can inspire some soloing ideas for you. Musicality is the term I use for how notes and patterns can be infused with imagination and personality, a way of playing that feels alive with emotion and transforms dry patterns into living music. The key to enjoying practice for me has been using this approach; taking a pattern that I’d like to master and then trying it with different rhythms to make it more musical and expressive. This helps me master the pattern while keeping things interesting and much closer to the way I want to play them in a real life playing scenario. I hope you enjoy the lesson, and please let me know if you have any questions.
