In this edition of Manned Space I discuss the life of astronaut Scott Carpenter and ride with him aboard his Mercury spacecraft he Carpenter named Aurora 7. Before there was an Apollo program and Project Gemini, before the moon landings, there was Project Mercury which which had as its goal the safe flight and return of a man in space. One of the original Mercury Seven astronauts (the others: Alan Shephard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper & Deke Slayton) Scott Carpenter was only the 4th American to fly in space becoming only the 2nd American to orbit Earth on May 24, 1962 in his Project Mercury spacecraft he called Aurora 7. The controversy surrounding his splashdown far from the designated landing zone at the conclusion of his flight ended Scott Carpenter's space flight career. Join me as I recount my personal memories of Scott Carpenter and his flight aboard Aurora 7 while examining autographs and memorabilia related to Scott Carpenter and his flight aboard Aurora 7 from my extensive personal collection of space artifacts and memorabilia. Before SpaceX or Blue Origin, at the dawn of the space age, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) astronauts were taking America's first steps into outer space. Project Mercury was America's first manned space program. It was during Project Mercury that astronaut Alan Shephard became the first American to travel into space. Soon after Alan Shepard's historic first, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. The follow on program to Project Mercury was Project Gemini a program that served as a bridge to the Apollo program all of which made the moon landings possible. The next time SpaceX or Blue Origin is in the news for going into outer space, remember the astronauts of Project Mercury, Project Gemini and the Apollo program who took America's first tentative steps into outer space, who took part in the epic moon landings of the Apollo program, who flew aboard America's first space station called Skylab and who blazed the trail for all that has happened since in manned spaceflight.
