The hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" has a beautiful history. The lyrics were penned by poet Joseph M. Scriven in 1855 as a poem to comfort his sick mother, whom he couldn't visit. The poem later became the iconic hymn we know today. Charles Crozat Converse composed the tune in 1868, which has since become synonymous with the lyrics. I'm also grateful to my friend Sitali Sitali, who rearranged the music for flute and piano. The hymn's message resonates deeply with me. Having lost my mother under difficult circumstances – I couldn't travel to see her due to flight disruptions, and she passed away before I could reach her – I find solace in the lyrics. The words remind us that Jesus is a friend who helps us carry our burdens, even in the toughest times.
